NARS & Makeup tricks
Renowned make-up artist and François Nars’ sidekick, Uzo talks make-up tricks and private islands.
Where it all started
I’ve been working for Nars for more than 13 years. I was with Nars when the blush Orgasm didn’t exist. It’s been so interesting to watch the evolution of the brand. Who knew when they launched Orgasm in 1999 that it would be this cult classic? I remember when it sold out. Francois did not expect what it has become today.
Book deal
It took four weeks to produce the book, Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself. Can you believe it? Francois had instructed a casting agency to scour the streets of New York City for 60 globally diverse women and men. He wanted different face shapes, skin-tones and professions. When it came to creating the looks, he didn’t want to know their background, he just wanted a blank canvas and to be inspired by the shape of their face or the colour of their eyes.
Working with a team of artists, François supervised everything and took the photographs. The man is a genius, he is amazing with colour. It’s a beauty manual that demystifies make-up application and techniques. Divided into three sections (play, perfect and polish), the book features real people and there’s an acetate overlay on the before and after images with Francois’s handwriting and the name of the products, colours and actual placement.
Reality check
This book is real. Looking at celebrities is not a good barometer of whether a look will work for you. Celebrities constantly tweak their faces and get treatments on a regular basis, in the real world most of us don’t have time for that and aren’t getting our nose tweaked or our brows lifted. François celebrates us – that’s what I love.
Life between cities
I’m based in LA but I fly a lot between LA and New York. It sounds like the perfect life but I spend half my time in an airplane and I visit every other city in between - Miami, Chicago, Dallas... François lives in New York but he also has a home in Motu Tane in the South Pacific. He bought the island - yes, the island - in 2000 when Shiseido bought the brand. Of course he also has a home in Paris but he really loves New York City.
Everything is illuminated
The years I’ve been at Nars I’ve become a much better make-up artist in terms of complexion. I love putting The Multiple [a three-in-one product] under foundation, it’s my signature. You can use any of the colours to highlight and warm the complexion before foundation. Just apply it to the cheeks and blend it into an upside-down triangle. My skin is oily and it works so well as it’s a cream-to-powder formula and is oil-free. I have to say, whether it’s a celebrity, model or soccer mum, everybody loves the look of illumination within the skin.
The essentials
As I’ve gotten older I try to carry less. I always have Exhibit A blush, which I love to use by itself or with other blushes. I love it on women with very dark or very pale skin. I use the cream shadows and apply it with my fingers. I always carry Triple X lip gloss, powder foundation because I always need to touch up, and a black pencil.
Try it all
I guess my make-up mantra is that make-up is there for people to experiment with. There’s so much good make-up out there, and technology has allowed products to be more sheer and lightweight that it’s almost criminal if you don’t try new colours. Go out there, step outside the box and don’t be afraid to experiment with colour. Sometimes when we limit ourselves we rob ourselves from discovering something that would be a wow factor for your lips or for your eyes.

Head to Toe Clari-fied!!!
I'm a happy girl now.

Here's why.
I cleansed my face with Clarisonic face brush & Boscia purifying gel (great for those combi oily girls!) The smoothness starts! Luve it!
Then I switched to the body brush onto the gadget.
Squeezed onto brush head some of the golden-beady Refining body polish (came with Clarisonic plus set) & started to go on my feet up my legs to my thighs and back of my knees. Ticklish! It's addictive!!! ;)
Then up my abs, bod, and to my shoulders, upper back and to lower back, then to my arms.
On the scrubby mood, I decided to also try Soap & Glory Scrub Actually (inspired by movie Love, Actually) and felt the heating sensation! Scrubbed and scrubbed! Shiokness!
Washed off all these gold & pink beads!
And smooth on body gel and started to shave! It's so much easier and cleaner without cuts & nicks which I used to get when I shaved! (Did i tell u that my bro also using Clarisonic to cleanse his face b4 he shaves! He loves it! ;)
Then I'm done!
I'm so smoooth head to toe & loving it!!! ^_~ *glee
U girls who love self-pampering must try it!!! You'll have enviably smooth beautiful legs & shoulders when you bare them this summer!

He belongs to the stage on classical performance. Such bass and magnetism in his voice quality, put him in a classic suit black and white, he looks the part already!

His exceptional hair-raising incredible bass voice quality, a voice that can move millions of audience..... la classico! 6 million views now and wayy to gooooo...

Write your life yourself
I once read a ziglar quote that I got immediately intrigued in...and follow till today.
You know... When you got overwhelmed and almost drowning in the sea of work & what not yours, you forgot about it. That's what happens to me. I lost my direction & purpose in life.
What I truly want...I mean my heart. Deep inside, the goal & DREAM is so strong!
It's burning slowly and picking up fire again when I give it attention!
Today, I am reminded of it again.
It's been a while since I read it and apply it! Now is the time again for some heart to heart with myself reflections.
" First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.
Life is a grindstone. Whether it wears you down or polishes you up depends on what YOU are made of."
~Zig Ziglar
What I want to be, who I want to be, who I am, remind myself this again and again. Keep in mind who I am. What I want to achieve! I really want to go out there & try out the real world! New York / Paris!
I want to work with a brand/ company who has resources to invest in me, groom me & allow me to grow immensely FAST!
Time I dont have to waste! I want it quick! I want it now!
I know I have nothing to lose,
and when I become transfixed on a passionate goal, I always give my all-> time & energy.
I am willing to work hard (& smart!) and give everything I have to be working towards becoming the No.1 fashion runways/ shows and become the BEST in the makeup industry, the IT celebrity artist!
Perhaps... Perhaps 3.. Or 5years later, I may come back again to Singapore and build my own beauty brand!

Thirst for younger supple skin?
When my skin is begging for water by rebelling with "dry flaky red skin",
What I do is to listen to it intently and find out its specific needs!
If you like me work in Sephora for years now (since 2008), u will by now build a mini Sephora at home.
There, I will search for skin remedies from dullness, breakouts, dryness, dehydration, aging, dark circles to pigmentation.
These few days I've been training alot about hydration especially when I myself need it!
I use #Sephora triple action cleansing water to remove my waterproof makeup & #Clarisonic Plus for 1-min efficient deep pore cleansing!
To remove face & eye makeup 1st... This cleansing water utilises the latest no-rinse technology for face & eye waterproof makeup. I still recommend using Sephora waterproof eye makeup remover (S$18) becos it's so easy, no rubbing required & it's really a makeup eraser!!! Becos our eye area is 7x thinner than our face! Hence expects our special care.
Then using a cleanser, Boscia purifying cleanser, with Clarisonic Plus ($375) to remove 6x more makeup than normal manual cleansing! I can't live without this cleansing brush! ^_~ it cleans out my pores so well everyday!
When I divide the cost of using it over 2 years everyday, it's only a freaking meagre amount of $0.04/ usage!
You will save facial sessions from this skinvestment! ;) trust me!
Then I use Sephora refreshing toner ($20) on cotton pads to double cleanse & mist on Caudalie beauty elixir ($75). This is very hydrating & soothing! ;) super like! I also use it set my makeup too! Luve the scent of essential oils!
Serums are a must step especially with age, many late nights and aiding cell repair.
Serums are able to supply nutrients to the cells.

It has a mineral sunscreen of titanium dioxide & zinc oxide = broad spectrum of UVA/UVB sun protection = you dont have to wait 30mins for the sunscreen to take effect!

- Highly effective in oil/ shine control hence makeup hold up longer for at least 8 hours

- Can reduce uneven skin tone hence we require lesser foundation coverage
- Hides pores & flaws to achieve flawless poreless finish
- Prevent oxidation of makeup on skin that is oily or prone to shine, hence solve the problem of makeup turning darker after lunch!

- Pearly-white - This is usually like a makeup base effect where it counteracts uneven dull skin tone. Pearlised finish gives a luminating brightening radiance to skin and instantly look younger. Suits dry skin. Options --> Hourglass Mineral primer, Urban decay Brightening face primer
- Purple - On the color wheel of artists, purple neutralises yellow. Yellow = sallow. Dull sallow skin tone can be corrected with this colored primer. Everyone can use this.
- Green - For reducing redness around the nose, cheeks and any sensitive areas so that concealing is easier and more effective. Options --> Make Up For Ever Primer in green, Smashbox Photofinish primer in adjust.

Nail patches look & feel the same as normal nail polishes and removes just the same way too!
But its millions times waayyyyyy better!!!
Say no to waiting time, drying time, calling time, sitting there like an idiot, hands outstretched under that fan that didn't seem to dry my nails!
